I know I feel an obligation to recycle, even though in many science classes we learn that is is a very minimal thing we do that still contributes to global warming because of the gas it takes to take it from your house to a center and then the processing it takes to make it usable again. Is it our responsibility to take care of the environment or someone larger?

We have a responsibility to take care of our responsibilities, when something falls into disrepair, we have an obligation to fix it. Sometimes though, it can be an overwhelming task that falls further into disrepair.

When we talk about obligation there is a large thing about not being a quitter. No one wants to be a quitter, and it is shameful to be one. If you quit it should only be for an emergency, much like how some doors are only allowed to be used in an emergency, even though they should be able to work as out doors all the time.
